Jazz academy workshop

Hi Steve,
I am sure that you and the coopistas have heard of the demise of the great Michael Garrick, jazz pianist/composer and educationalist extraordinaire.
His jazz academy runs both a summer school and a winter jazz, and his son Gabriel, another wonderful musician and educator is taking over where he left off.
There is a winter jazz workshop scheduled for 27th to 30th of December....I have been several times and it is just brilliant, and fills a hungry gap, one might say.
The URL for it is www.jazzacademy.co.uk   and you click on brochures to get the best info about the workshop.  I would be so delighted if you could print off a few, and also give out said URL to all jazzers
who might consider coming.
Thank you very much in advance for doing so.
I follow the co-op avidly, and it makes me want to come back to Brighton.....I hope I might get down some time in the new year.   Tell Geoff Simkins I say hi if you see him.
and love to you,
Betsyx

Hi Steve
Have been away so haven't been near my computer till this morning. I am attaching all the necessary charts for both sessions. (Good Bait) this week. If you can send them out and get some idea of who will have
a chance to print them out before tonight, I can make up the shortfall.

Good Bait is a choon innit?
Why is it though, whenever you look at rhythm changes it's alwasys on the sidle up - and not quite the fuill rhythm changes? Liked Simon's approach though boiling the form down to an AABA made up of another
AABA.
can you email the co-opistas to let them know that I have a gig on Sunday evening...?

Simon will be doing Good Bait and Oleo tonight. He will bring the charts. The changes are Rhythm Changes for both of course. Anthropology is another tune that uses these changes.

And from me:
It is very common for jazz standards to be written using an established chord sequence. The most common is the Blues of course and the second is Rhythm Changes. You could argue that it is only the melody that is new but in the case of Good Bate the B section harmony was also re written.

Hi Steve,
I have been asked to tutor on a jazz course over in Barcelona 5-8 April 2012.  I've got a flyer for it in pdf format and wondered if you would stick it on your website, along with a sentence along the lines of: 'Local jazz saxophonist and educator, Simon D'souza will be among the core team of tutors for this course'?  The course leader Clio Byrne, is a fabulous singer and educator in he rown right and in fact attended the Chichester Jazz Course some years ago, hence the link with myself.  Let me know if you need the information in any other format.
In other news we haven't had any masterclasses at Chichester this year so far but hope to get one in during the Spring term - I'll keep you posted, of course.
Best wishes

Jam Session on Tuesday

Co-opistas
Sorry for the late notification but I was in London yesterday at the Jazz Festival. You can hear me on Radio 3 tonight on jazz lineup and again at the McCoy Tyner concert in a couple of weeks time. You should be able to hear me clapping in the audience on both shows.
Tuesday will be another jam sesssion at the Park View. It is a great chance to get a good solid blow without lots of edificatious instruction. See you there.
Our Saturday lunch times at the Dome are going well. Turn up and check them out if you have not been yet.

Benn Clatworthy Quartet @ Brighton Jazz Club

Dear All,
A very welcome return to Brighton Jazz Club this Friday evening for masterful saxophonist Benn Clatworthy on his annual pond-hop from his adopted California. The following is by John Styles from our website:
BENN CLATWORTHY Tenor saxophone, flute
JOHN DONALDSON Piano
SIMON THORPE Bass
JOSH MORRISON Drums
Benn's collection of air miles and his apparent immunity to jet lag mean that this Los Angeles-based maestro has become a frequent and  welcome visitor to UK jazz clubs. His abilities and dedication invite streams of superlatives on both sides of the Atlantic; born in England, he settled in LA in 1980. Now truly part of the US music scene, he has a reputation as one of the hardest-working musicians in jazz. His blistering technique and rich tone are evidence of great dedication and a legendary practice routine; thanks to this, we get to
enjoy a genuinely classic performer firmly in the vein of his professed heroes, including Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins. His many recordings also feature magnificent flute playing and impressive compositions.
Joining him on this tour are the familiar names of a highly accomplished trio. John and Simon are both established bandleaders of several years standing, with several imaginative projects to their
credit. Both played with Bheki Mseleku and have toured a special tribute to him, releasing the CD Nearer Awakening.
Simon appeared on Benn's earlier gigs here; another virtuosic player and a bandleader himself, he's also appeared for us with Steve Waterman and Greg Abate. Like Benn, John spent several years based in California, where he studied with Joe Henderson and played with Larry Grenadier, Red Holloway, John Handy, Jeff Ballard, Eddie Henderson and Laurindo Almeida. Aside from his Mseleku tribute recording, John has produced fine CDs with his own trio (Music Box) and in his duo with Mark Edwards (Live at Appleby Jazz Festival).
Josh brings an impressive range of new experience to the band, from the acclaimed group Empirical, to the bands of F-ire Collective saxophonist Rachel Musson and of rising star vocalist Fini Bearman, appearing on their respective recordings Flight Line and Step Up. He even finds time to gig with his own band.
For more information see www.bennclatworthy.com.
Tickets, priced at £13/11 are sold on the door, in advance (up to 1pm on the Friday of the performance) from The Dome Box Office (Tel: 01273 709709), and online through Brighton Ticket Shop www.brightonticketshop.com
Please note that doors open at 8:00 pm with first set starting c. 8:30 pm. Show will finish by 11:00 pm.
Very best wishes,
Tim Haillay

Irresistable BJMC Jam

Coopistas
Home made jam for sale this week and next. Sticky to the touch and fruity Jo will be conducting the BJMC Jam Recipe Book at the Park View Tavern in Preston Drove ably assisted by the arromatic and melifluous
Annie. You will have the opportunity to blow your lids off for two solid hours. If you have tunes that you know how to impress on then bring them along in three keys (the other 9 can wait). Jam sessions come at a significantly reduced price so penuary need no longer be a reason to look longingly through the window at those of us having real fun. Singers, trombones, accordians and even kazoos are all welcome.
And for your pleasure Alice will be leading some of the BJMC cream at the Dome this lunch time. Hedonism is clearly a piece of cake.
