Hi All
Tom Phelan led a great workshop - he took us through the Bill Evans tune "Re: Person I Knew", a lovely melody and harmony which has a number of altered chords to negotiate. He gave us the melody and chords and a sheet with all the related scales which he had us play through together.
We went on to solo using the said scales and everyone did a really good job of it, he also discussed using anticipation in our solos which means anticipating the chord you are moving to by playing it before you arrive at it. A simple example is if you had a bar in 4/4 of C7 followed by a bar of F7 you could start to solo over the F7 around beats 3 or 4 in the C7 bar which creates tension which is released when the rhythm section plays the F7. Bear in mind you would not really do this on every chord in a tune - it is used as another device to create interest when soloing.
As Tom is with us again tomorrow he would like to take another look at it and also will bring another surprise tune for us to play. Please come along and learn from a really good musician and teacher who is in demand to perform here and abroad.
See you there.
