Hi all
Mark Bassey was our tutor for last Tuesday's workshop,
We spent the first half of the session working on the topic of "how to play on a very fast tune (without collapsing … )". The tune we used was Cherokee. Both the topic area and the tune were suggested by Hilary. We practised clapping on various beats in the bar (not 'at the bar' otherwise it's my round again …) whilst listening to the original recording of Cherokee (with Clifford Brown & Max Roach). Then we tried soloing over the A section using just one note (concert Bb aka the tonic note) with a focus on rhythmic placement. The B section is for next week!
The second half of the session we looked at Rhumbolero (a piece of Mark's based on Armando's Rhumba by Chick Corea). We approached the soloing using a guide tone line.
Mark is back with us again this Tuesday would like to play both of these tunes again.
And will do the whole sequence of Cherokee and on Rhumbolero I would like to dip into a Chick Corea solo which he transcribed.
