Happy 2009

May 2009 bring you lots of new music. I was listening to In Our Time this morning and one philosopher was quoted as saying that music is truth. I like that.

I am still working out my music objectives for 2009. How about learn 6 more standards, work out a solo over Rythm Changes and play the blues properly? Well, maybe one of those.

FC bought me a new tenor mouthpiece for Xmas. It is a Yanigasawa 7 and I will be playing it next Tuesday. I have done tons of playing over the holiday. I have been learning a Clifford Brown blues solo. The man was a genius and died at the age of 25. We were cheated. His solos sound so easy but have a beauty of harmonic form phrasing. Many of his phrases have passed into the cannon of jazz licks. It is interesting to play a trumpet solo on a sax as it results in note combinations that do not come naturally to a sax player. I have been using Transcribe a lot as well. It is a great programme. There is so much more to it than I use. If anyone wants an intro to using it there are several members that will be happy to help.

We will be having a jam for the next two Tuesdays. This helps us make up the cash shortfall from the previous term. It also guarantees maximum soloing for everyone. Tim will be doing Canteloupe Island which is a modal piece. I will do Caravan and a blues in F. Las Vegas Tango (two key centres only) is another possibility. Py will probably do something. If anyone wants a Real Book then let me know. If you can bring your own copies of the lead sheets that also helps.

See you there.
