Stella By Starlight for Tonight. Tuesdays workshop

Hi Steve,

I was thinking Stella by Starlight. It has a nice variety of harmonic
structures to discuss.

But has anyone leading the workshops done it recently?

Tuesdays BJMC Workshop

Co-opistas

This Tuesday sees the wonderful Jake Goss running the session. Jake
had a big success with his Banyan band and album. See you there.

Dome Gigs and Tuesday Workshop

Coopistas
Coop bands will be playing in the Dome Foyer all afternoon for the
wonderful People's Day which is being put on by.... the people in
Brighton centre today. Looks like it will be a good alternative to the
unpredictable weather. The magnificent Tim Sweets Bollwell will be
leading another excellent workshop on Tuesday at the Open House. Be
there or be less motivated.

Tuesday's BJMC Workshop

Returning this Tuesday, by popular demand, is our very own Tim Sweets Bolwell. Tacking off his hat as Chair of the BJMC and putting on his tutors hat.

Tim's well planned sessions, never just "throwing" sheet music at us, evolve organically testing and challenging our basic musical skills, building up to some inspired blowing and soloing. The last session Tim ran got the group to create their own composition to solo over, and was described by one member as a breath of fresh air and the best session in an age.

This time Tim promises to reveal the secret to becoming a great Jazz musician, apart from hard work, more hard work and hard work.

Our advice is come early and be prepared to sing, clap, dance and play your socks off.

Tuesday's Jazz Workshop

Co-opistas
This Tuesday Angele will be taking us through the Toots Thielmands
tune Bluesette. Copies attached.
To keep the Co-op afloat financially we are having to raise the fees
slightly. £6 waged and £3 consessions. Still excellent value for 2
hours tuition from top professionals. Can we also remind people that
as we get the room at a very reduced rate it is not in our interestes
to be taking our own beveridges as that could result in us losing the
room. You know who you are. Thanks for your co-operation.

Hi,

Only a couple of weeks until Dr Lonnie Smith visits The Basement in Brighton as part of the ongoing kineojazz series.

Who is Dr Lonnie Smith?
Dr. Lonnie Smith is an authentic Master of the Hammond B3 organ. For over five decades he has furthered the sound of Jazz Organ, created a worldwide fan-base, and revealed his musical talents on over seventy albums. Today, his name is truly synonymous with the instrument.

Dr. Smith has recorded and performed with George Benson, Lou Donaldson, Randy Brecker, John Abercrombie, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Ronnie Cuber, Kenny Garrett, Lenny White, Reuben Wilson, Lee Morgan, David 'Fat Head' Newman, King Curtis, Blue Mitchell, Joe Lovano, Jimmy McGriff, Frank Foster, Ron Carter, Grover Washington, Jr., Dizzy Gillespie and virtually anyone else you care to name. A prolific creative force and innovator, his musical evolution has included recording everything from tribute albums to Jimi Hendrix and John Coltrane to straight-ahead jazz, funk and acid-jazz recordings.

During the past decade there has been a resurgence of interest in the Hammond B3 and Dr. Smith has been amused to find himself sampled in rap, dance and house grooves while being credited as a forefather of Acid Jazz. His recent critically acclaimed recording of pop star Beck's tunes, including "Loser," has secured his relevance with yet another generation of music fans.

At The Basement he is joined by two of great New York musicians - Jonathan Kreisberg (an established jazz guitar with a big reputation) and Jamire Williams (he's played with Robert Glasper amongst others and is par of a new breed combing drum & bass/hip hop etc. with the jazz tradition).

What kind of doctor is he?
Goodness knows. Come along and find out!
