Fwd: Brighton Jazz Club @ Komedia

Co-opistas

For your information. Cuts to the arts and less money in the system
has its knock on effects.

Dear All,
Rather than add this in the body of the text advertising Friday night
I am circulating this as a separate email.

We normally cut back on promotions at this time of year, with the
Brighton Festival and the Summer months making the promotion of
regular nights more of a financial risk, this year we are having to
take a longer break to maintain the financial health and longevity of
Brighton Jazz Club.

It has become financially unviable for us to promote regular jazz at
Komedia and we have taken this opportunity to look for suitable,
affordable alternatives. We have some ideas in mind but at the moment
nothing is certain. What is certain is that we will be finishing in
the Komedia on Friday April 15th and reopening again on Friday
September 2nd.

We already have some exciting musicians booked in the Autumn season,
with the likes of Swedish saxophone sensation Marius Neset, pianists
Stan Tracey and Julian Joseph leading trios so we will be continuing
to promote top-quality,  cutting-edge international jazz.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your
continued support and hope that you will follow us as we look to
pastures new.

I will circulate details of the new venue(s) as soon as more
information is available.

Best wishes,
Tim Haillay

Tuesdays BJMC Workshop

Co-opistas

Gary Kavanagh is running the workshop again this Tuesday. Always a
source of some solid practice advice.
Tim sweets Bolwell will be leading the band at the Dome on Saturday.
Well worth making a special trip for.
The Easter Saturday workshop is gathering momentum with 10 people
booked for it so far. Alex Maguire will be letting us have sheet in
advance to get our chops around. So don't leave it to the last minute.
Let me know if you want to be on the booked list.

Steve

Fwd: Next Tuesdays workshop

From Gary

This should be familiar teritory to most people.

Hi steve I'm planning a call and response session using a blues in Bb
as the vehicle so if we can get the good folks to memorize the
sequence that would be great. Week after we'll be looking at rhythm
changes. If you need chord sheets let me know but I would have thought
most people Would be cool.

Regards Gary

BJC Workshop next Tuesday

Co-opistas

The superb trumpet player Gary Kavanagggg takes the workshop next
week. I will let youknow what tunes he is doing when I hear. This
Saturday the lovely Patrick will be leading a band at the Dome Foyer
which is now doing light food and superb coffee. This Friday sees one
of the Co-ops longest standing and favourite tutors / players Julian
Nicholas at the Jazz Club at the Komedia. He has a brilliant band and
it is guaranteed to be a really good night. Don't forget to ask for
your Co-op discount. See you there.

And finally, bookings are enthusiastically dribbling in for the Easter
Saturday Jazz-Rock workshop with Alex Maguire. He will be doing some
Robert Wyatt tunes from the tour he did with Gilad Atmon. If that does
not push all your buttons then there is no hope for the world. Email
me if you want a place. It will be at the Corn Exchange kindly donated
for the day by the Dome. £20 in advance. Cheep as chips.

Fwd: tune

Co-opistas

The Master, Geoff Simkins will be running Tuesdays workshop. If you
fancy a bit of Thelonius then it will be the place to be. This
Saturday there will not be a Co-op band at the Dome as other stuff is
happening but you may want to check that out instead anyway. Saturday
the 19th Patrick will be leading a session which may involve a singer
too.The following Saturday Andy P will be leading the gig but I will
be joining the TUC march in London to try and defend the welfare state
or whatever is left of it.

Attached are C, Bb, Eb and bass clef parts for T. Monk's "Nutty".
Medium tempo (140-150'ish), swing feel.
Best,
Geoff

Co-opistas

Geoff Simkins will be taking the workshop next week. Charts are
attached. On Saturday Ed will be leading a band. 1.00 - 2.00.

Weekend tickets to the Swanage Jazz Festival are now on sale.
http://www.swanagejazz.org/ Some of us will be camping for the
weekend. Great fun last year with Alan Barnes one of the festival
directors and performers.

I am also taking advance bookings for the Day workshop on Easter
Saturday at the Corn Exchange. The amazing Alex Maguire will be
teaching Jazz Rock and will be taking us through some Robert Wyatt
tunes. Here is a video of one tune with Alex on keys.

Let me know if you want to book on to it. Only £20 for the day (when
booked in advance).

Message from Geoff:

I'm attaching some parts for "Lady Bird" which is quite a straight
ahead melody/sequence but I thought we could do it in 5/4 which might
be a good challenge and opportunity to practice in unfamiliar time
signatures. Metronome mark is 135 but we could maybe do it a bit
faster when people are comfortable with the time feel.
Very best,
Geoff
