Thanks for posting the info about our last jam session at the Alibi,
Hove, on the Co-Op Blog. We had a lot of interest and a really good
turnout from the co-op members, and one member even played for the
first time in a public jam. We're having our second jam on:

Hi Steve,
A group of us past and present co-op members (myself, James Farebrother, piano; Oli Vincent, electric bass; with Giovanni Greco, drums) are getting together to have a jazz jam session on Thursday12th January at the Alibi pub in Hove. My own experience has been that there is a big step between playing in the co-op, and playing in theexisting jam sessions around town where it can be difficult, and sometimes a little intimidating, to get up on stage. We hope to bridge that gap with an informal and supportive atmosphere where everyone
feels they can have a go, similar to the jam sessions I've played with the coop.
I'd be grateful if you could post this on the blog and mail it to the co-op members. This will be a one-off event but if it's successful, we hope to do more, and it would be great to have the support of co-op members for the first night, whether it's to play or just to listen to some jazz.
The Alibi Pub (22 Victoria Terrace, Hove) is on Kingsway, next to the Texaco Petrol Station and near the King Alfred Leisure Centre (http://www.thealibihove.co.uk/).

I am sure that you and the coopistas have heard of the demise of the great Michael Garrick, jazz pianist/composer and educationalist extraordinaire.
His jazz academy runs both a summer school and a winter jazz, and his son Gabriel, another wonderful musician and educator is taking over where he left off.
There is a winter jazz workshop scheduled for 27th to 30th of December....I have been several times and it is just brilliant, and fills a hungry gap, one might say.

And from me:
It is very common for jazz standards to be written using an established chord sequence. The most common is the Blues of course and the second is Rhythm Changes. You could argue that it is only the melody that is new but in the case of Good Bate the B section harmony was also re written.

Sorry for the late notification but I was in London yesterday at the Jazz Festival. You can hear me on Radio 3 tonight on jazz lineup and again at the McCoy Tyner concert in a couple of weeks time. You should be able to hear me clapping in the audience on both shows.

Benefit gig - 18th November at The Brunswick

Loose Arrangement are a local jazz-funk band, fronted by talented vocalist Nicky White, bringing an eclectic mix of jazz, funk, blues and soul, inspired by the music of Claire Martin, Terry Callier, Nils Lundgren, Melody Gardot and Dusty Springfield. Tonight they are hosting a benefit in memory of Richard Baker, who died earlier this year after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. Money raised will go to the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust. A very welcome return to Brighton Jazz Club this Friday evening for masterful saxophonist Benn Clatworthy on his annual pond-hop from his adopted California. The following is by John Styles from our website:

Benn's collection of air miles and his apparent immunity to jet lag mean that this Los Angeles-based maestro has become a frequent and welcome visitor to UK jazz clubs. His abilities and dedication invite streams of superlatives on both sides of the Atlantic; born in England, he settled in LA in 1980. Now truly part of the US music scene, he has a reputation as one of the hardest-working musicians in jazz. His blistering technique and rich tone are evidence of great dedication and a legendary practice routine; thanks to this, we get to
enjoy a genuinely classic performer firmly in the vein of his professed heroes, including Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins. His many recordings also feature magnificent flute playing and impressive compositions.
Joining him on this tour are the familiar names of a highly accomplished trio. John and Simon are both established bandleaders of several years standing, with several imaginative projects to their
credit. Both played with Bheki Mseleku and have toured a special tribute to him, releasing the CD Nearer Awakening.
Simon appeared on Benn's earlier gigs here; another virtuosic player and a bandleader himself, he's also appeared for us with Steve Waterman and Greg Abate. Like Benn, John spent several years based in California, where he studied with Joe Henderson and played with Larry Grenadier, Red Holloway, John Handy, Jeff Ballard, Eddie Henderson and Laurindo Almeida. Aside from his Mseleku tribute recording, John has produced fine CDs with his own trio (Music Box) and in his duo with Mark Edwards (Live at Appleby Jazz Festival).

Steve Lacy and Django Bates, he formed a trio including the
influential US rhythm pairing of Greg Cohen and Joey Baron.
Tonight's quartet toured around Europe earlier this year as part of a
special festival of UK jazz; they have a new CD available, Urban Theme
Park, which is already gaining praise for the inventive range of
styles on display. It features all tonight's players; Liam
consistently delivers a world class sensibility as pianist, composer,
bandleader and as a recent partner on Christine Tobin's Tapestry
performance.
Oli's experience includes the finest jazz players – Gwilym Simcock,
Tim Whitehead, Bobby Wellins, Zoe Rahman, Jim Mullen – and leading
Irish folk singer Cara Dillon. He was a founder member of the Orient
House Ensemble, and has since toured the Middle East with Reem Kelani.
Gene remains one of our most popular visiting drummers. He brings a
taste of his native New York to his playing, and the wealth of
experience and work rate gained during his studies on the famed
Berklee jazz course – not for the faint-hearted, with fellow students
being Marvin 'Smitty' Smith and Jeff 'Tain' Watts. His most
established presence in the UK is alongside Julian in Partisans, and
he also appears with Zoe Rahman, Christine Tobin, Bobby Wellins and
others.

onTuesday. Feedback on these sessions has been really great so don't
miss some of the most important fundamentals to jazz imporvisation
from one of the Coops most accessible tutors. I don't yet have the
tunes we will be looking at but will forward when I hear.

A reminder that Saturday lunchtime gigs at the dome foyer continue and
provide a relaxed and welcome interlude to Saturday shopping in the

presents complex ideas in a very accessible way and has been a popular
tutor for the Coop for the past 25 years.

will be playing.

Our autumn season maintains our usual high quality, and opens with one
of the greatest saxophonists of our age. Peter is one of the seven
wonders of the jazz world (ok, there may be more); a master at his
instrument since the days of Ronnie Scott's, (he played at the
opening, as an eighteen-year-old) he has sustained a solo career of
increasing excellence, while also playing alongside the world's
greatest names, including Count Basie, Lalo Schifrin, Ray Charles and
just about any major jazz name of the last half-century. One
particular favourite was Elvin Jones, for whom Peter formed a tribute
band; Charlie Watts of 'Quintet' and 'Big Band' fame picked him to act
as MD for his Bird-inspired supergroup.
Delving into his showbiz-related career reveals Marlene Dietrich,
Eartha Kitt, James Brown and Lauren Bacall; film and theatre work
includes appearances alongside Michael Caine, Matt Damon and Eddie
Izzard. There are many accomplishments alongside his jazz career; he
has written an absorbing autobiography and was awarded the honorary
degree of Doctor of Letters by Roehampton University. His questing
musical intelligence extends into classical realms, and writing string
arrangements for his compositions; one particular influence is the
rich musical territory of Béla Bartók.
Peter's quartet has remained at the heart of this astonishing career,
featuring this peerless and highly-gifted rhythm section. Steve's
virtuosic playing runs from the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine to the New
Jazz Couriers; Andy will be along soon with the great Stan Tracey,
while Mark will be along even sooner, i.e. next week, leading his own

We're delighted to announce that the full programme for this year's Festival is now on sale, and up on the website. Last night, the jazzers turned out in force for the launch party, which took place at Smithfield Bar and Grill. Check out our Flickr page for a sneaky peek at the some of the photos. One of our Young and Serious members – Chris Corbishley – captured video-bites of party guests, which we'll post on the blog shortly.

We also wanted to share some fantastic news with you. Yesterday afternoon Ornette Coleman confirmed an appearance at Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 20 November – a real coup for the last night of the Festival. This'll be his first London appearance since he curated Southbank Centre's Meltdown Festival in 2009. Tickets go on sale next Thursday 22 September.

At the last count, we have this year's figures at 280 events and 53 venues, with over 600 hours of live music. The mind boggles. In addition to the concerts, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved, through our string of talks, workshops and masterclasses. And around a quarter of the programme is free. So no need to tighten the purse strings – instead search FREE on the website, or look out for the FREE symbol in the full Festival brochure.

JAZZ MASTERS

The Festival celebrates jazz masters from all corners of the planet – Impulse! Records icon McCoy Tyner*, saxophone revolutionary Archie Shepp, drum legend Roy Haynes, Brazilian force Hermeto Pascoal, bassist Steve Swallow - they all give the Festival a backbone of class and a lifetime of amazing music and are joined by younger stars like Ambrose Akinmusire, Stefano Bollani* and Lionel Loueke.

THE PAST COMES ALIVE

Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, John Coltrane, Dave Brubeck, Buck Clayton, Roy Eldridge – the spirits of iconic jazz figures down the decades inhabit every corner of the Festival.

SINGING STARS

The Festival takes in every avenue of the jazz vocal. Highlights include Jazz Voice – featuring Noisettes singer Shingai Shoniwa and the internationally renowned Norma Winstone - Ben L'Oncle Soul's Otis Redding/Ray Charles-inspired celebration of classic soul revues, former J-Life singer Julie Dexter and trip-hop/acoustic soul chanteuse Andreya Triana – best known for her collaborative work with Bonobo.

FUTURE SOUNDS OF JAZZ

Emerging from the tradition is a wave of next-generation musicians. Nik Bartsch, Robert Glasper, Gretchen Parlato and Beats & Pieces bring music from both sides of the Atlantic to Kings Place. Former EST linchpin Magnus Ostrom, radical jazz/math-rock outfit trioVD and the Robert Glasper Experiment set up shop in Shoreditch, Loop and F-IRE collectives provide new routes into jazz and Arun Ghosh throws a fiery indo-jazz attitude into the mix.

LOOKING EAST

The Festival journeys eastwards, with Emir Kusturica's Balkan fantasies, Ilhan Irsahin's late-night sessions straight from the Istanbul club culture, tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, Iran's Kayhan Kahlor and Madjid Khaladj, Romanian pianist Lucian Ban and acclaimed Sarod player Soumik Datta.

THE EUROZONE

The European jazz scene has never been stronger. Key figures in this year's Festival include veritable legend Martial Solal, reedman and ageless maestro Michel Portal, Swiss trio Rusconi and a strong representation from quintessential European label ECM Records - Marcin Wasilewski, Colin Vallon, Stefano Bollani*, Nik Bartsch, Stephan Micus and Arild Andersen.

RADICAL MOVERS AND SHAKERS

This year's programme is peppered with the individual spirits of artists who have taken the music to unexpected places. Musical visionaries Henry Threadgill, Steve Coleman and Steve Williamson make rare London appearances. Han Bennink duets with the enigmatic force of Charles Gayle. Jerry Dammers – founder of The Specials - brings his 20 piece Spatial A.K.A. Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta re-groups with iconoclastic pianist Mathew Bourne and percussionist Vladimir Tarasov.

The truely amazing Tristan Banks will be leading the workshop for the
next two weeks. Tristan is himself a graduate of the Coop moving on to
a highly aclaimed professional career in jazz. I saw him at Brecon
Jazz Festival last year. As a drummer he has studied in Brazil and
will be bringing that much neglected element of rhythm to the
Workshop. Essential for all musicians.

The gig at the Dome this Saturday lunchtime will be a trio with
Corrado, Py and Alice. The second half Linda and Andy Pickett will
join us to make a quintet. Quality and it's free.

wonderful People's Day which is being put on by.... the people in
Brighton centre today. Looks like it will be a good alternative to the
unpredictable weather. The magnificent Tim Sweets Bollwell will be

Returning this Tuesday, by popular demand, is our very own Tim Sweets Bolwell. Tacking off his hat as Chair of the BJMC and putting on his tutors hat.

Tim's well planned sessions, never just "throwing" sheet music at us, evolve organically testing and challenging our basic musical skills, building up to some inspired blowing and soloing. The last session Tim ran got the group to create their own composition to solo over, and was described by one member as a breath of fresh air and the best session in an age.

This time Tim promises to reveal the secret to becoming a great Jazz musician, apart from hard work, more hard work and hard work.

Our advice is come early and be prepared to sing, clap, dance and play your socks off.

BJMC Tuesday Workshop

Despite the gloom and doom about this being the last day of the
Brighton Festival the party atmosphere continues for Co-op members as

Brighton Jazz School - 'Learn to Listen Sessions'
The 'Learn to Listen' sessions will take place on a Thursday (6pm-8pm)
at The Brunswick in Hove. It is open to non-musicians as well as
musicians and anyone interested in jazz. We will be looking at a very
wide variety of jazz styles from it's beginnings to its current state.
It is a great chance to find out about new players (and old ones),
and also a chance to share and talk about your favourite players. The
course will follow Jazz History and give you an overview of the
development of the music. We will also spend considerable time
looking at important and key musicians that helped develop and push
the music forward. Learn how to listen to jazz, what to listen out
for and how to fully appreciated this beautiful art-form.

I'm going to run the sessions in ten week blocks (£6 a session payable
in 10 session blocks). If you can't make all of them then I will be
keeping a register so you can drop in to sessions or make use of them
in another term.

Where possible I will try to cross-link the listening to what we are
doing in the BJS practical Tuesday course so there would be huge
incentive and benefit for those attending on Tuesday to join the
Thursday listening sessions too. There is of course, no obligation.
:)

Please get in contact ASAP if you are interested in attending, I have
limited numbers and have had lots of interest in this already. Please
act fast!

Where? - The Brunswick, Holland Road, Hove.
When? -Every Tuesday for 10 sessions (rolling 3 term course) starting

This Tuesday will be another Festival jam session downstairs at the
PVT. If you have a favourite tune you would like to play then bring
charts for us to share. These sessions are a real opportunity to do
some serious blowing. The session this week will be conducted by Jo
and the cost is a rediculously low £3 which helps build the BJMC
coffers to pay for tutors after the Festival break.

Saturday was the first day of the Brighton Festival. Peter and Darryl
did the BJMC proud. There will not be another Saturday lunchtime
session until the first Saturday in June when Tony Bloodaxe Gill will
be performing his superb poetry and music. If you like Ivor Cutler

If you look out of the highest window in your abode you might catch a glimpse of the tents and pennants of the mighty Ska Kestra as it masses for its fourth assault on the Brighton Festival Fringe. The legendary Mark Bassey will be leading us in the lists - tilting at the great titles of the ska repertoire (ok, enough is enough). We aim to sell out yet again and to aid us in this endeavour we are teaming up with DJ Amma (dubbed the "Queen of Ska" by no less than Toots himself). Book early and don't hang about on the night - DJ Amma on at 7.00 - Kestra on 8.30 - 10. Look forwarding to seeing you there.

This Saturday 23rd sees Phil Miller and Alex Maguire of Hatfield and
the North leading a day workshop for the Coop at the Corn exchange.
They will be taking us through some early Soft Machine numbers and
some other tunes that Phil and Robert Wyatt have written. The 10 piece
workshop band will also perform the lunchtime gig 1.00 - 2.00 at the
Dome Foyer so get along and enjoy.

This Tuesday the trumpet player Kjell Berglund will be leading the
session. Kjell, who used to run the Swedish High School in Portslade,
played with Terry Seabrook for a number of years. He usually brings
very contemporary tunes and some of them have passed into the Coop jam
session song book.

If anyone is wanting to do the day workshop next Saturday then let me
know quickly as we now have some charts to work on. The cost is a
stupidly cheap £20. The tunes of Robert Wyatt and Hugh Hopper will
require some advance homework. The workshop will also be performing at
the Dome Foyer next Saturday so check it out whilst enjoying the
excellent coffee. There is no Coop performance there today although it
is open.

I'm writing again to inform you and members of the Brighton Jazz
Musicians Cooperative about the premier performance of The Brighton
Jazz Suite which my big band will be performing on April 24th (Easter
Sunday) at 8pm at the Brunswick, Holland Road, Hove.

The members of my fantastic band are:

Dave Moorhouse, Martijn van Galen, Rob Heasman, Bob Turner (trumpets)
Paul Nieman, Mark Bassey, Tim Wade and Howard Beagley (trombones)
Alex Bondonno, Phil Paton, Brendan Kelly, Simon D'Souza, Anna Jordanous (saxes)
Terry Pack (string bass) , Jerry Dearden (bass guitar), Dave Trigwell
(drums) and myself on piano/compositions

Unlike other big bands, almost everyone gets a chance to solo and
each one is a terrific soloist in their own right.

Tickets are £8 and £3 concessions (students).

The pieces are all based on past and present aspects of Brighton. It
is my policy to have more local relevance of jazz than is normally the
case.
I've never worked in a cotton plantation in the deep South or in a bar
in New York City, but I have walked along Brighton sea-front.

Tim Bolwell will be leading tomorrow nights workshop. There will be no
Saturday gig at the Dome as another event is taking place. However the
final gig before the summer break for the jazz club sees the Dave
Stapleton Quintet coming over from Wales. The band plays all of Dave's
own very contemporary tunes. Fabulous arrangements and some amazing
trumpet and sax playing. It has my personal guarantee.

And finally, the week after (23rd) sees our day jazz/rock workshop
where Alex Maguire will be taking us through some of the Canterbury
Bands music. Robert Wyatt fans should not miss this at an amazing £20.
There are still some places so let me know if you want to book on.

A couple of kineojazz dates at the The Basement for 2011

Thanks to all of you who made the 2010 gigs at The Basement with Joe Lee Wilson, Claire Martin, Cubana Bop and Liane Carroll such a success. It's given us the confidence to put some more dates in the diary - both of which are on Saturday nights.

Saturday April 30th is a great line-up featuring the trumpeter/singer Sue Richardson and her band. Sue is gaining a national reputation with her gigging and recording - you can find examples of her music here: www.splashpointmusic.com/sue.html. She joined by a great band featuring Andy Williams (guitar), Neal Richardson (piano) George Trebar (double bass) and Sam Glasson (drums).

Support is provided by Smithville, an exciting new quintet Andy Pickett (baritone & flute), yours truly (guitar), Alice Hawkes (organ), Keith Baxter (bass), Phil Naylor (drums).

Saturday 18th June we have the legendary hammond organ player from New York - Dr Lonnie Smith and his Trio, featuring the brilliant guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg and the equally brilliant young drummer Jamire Williams (drummers - you have to check out some of his solos on youtube).

This coming Friday evening, for our penultimate club night at Komedia,
we are delighted to welcome rising stars Kairos 4tet on a national
tour promoting the release of thier new CD 'Statement of Intent'. The
following is by John Styles from our website:

The members of Kairos 4tet are four of the freshest talents on the UK
jazz scene, yet such is the impact that they have already made
collectively and individually, they will be familiar to many
listeners. The band seem destined to develop a strong presence in
jazz, to rank alongside Partisans and Perfect Houseplants.

Bandleader Adam first played for us last summer, with the Sam Crowe
Group, a unit that also includes Jasper. Such was the impact of that
gig, and hearing Adam's debut band CD Kairos Moment, that tonight's
appearance became a necessity. The debut recording and the new CD,
Statement of Intent, (launched on this tour) confirm the buzz about
Adam's talents as a saxophonist and composer; he acknowledges the
influence of his teachers and mentors such as Mark Lockheart and
Julian Argüelles, as well as the wider appeal of Miles, Joe Henderson,
Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder and many others.

Jasper is of course one of the most hotly-tipped talents of recent
years, as leader of Phronesis, with Jim Hart's Gemini and the Loop and
F-ire Collectives. The third Phronesis CD Alive was rated Jazz Album
of the Year 2010 by both Jazzwise and Mojo. It features Ivo, another
multi-talented player who has gigged with Stan Sulzmann, Tim Garland,
Jim Mullen, and Gerard Presencer. His own band have recorded Caught In
The Light of Day (Edition Records).

Jon is now London-based after gigging in Manchester; he's performed
with Byron Wallen, Alec Dankworth, Martin Speake, Nikki Iles, Yuri
Goloubev and Mike Walker. A major part of the group's sound, he is
also currently working with the Pete Hurt and Hannes Riepler Quartets,
Carlos Lopez-Real's Mandorla and Anglo-German collaboration Paragon.

This Tuesday Tim Sweetlips Bollwell will be running one of our ever
popular open mic sessions. All the adrenaline of a performance but
with none of the fear of total humiliation. Tim will be playing today
at the Dome Saturday lunch slot so catch up with his honey tone there.

On the wider front, the arts took a major kick in the nether regions
from the government this week with a massive cut to the Arts Council
Grant. This will affect Same Sky who organise the massively popular
Children's Parade next year.The Arts Council has also been an
important supporter of Brighton Jazz Club in the past. Next Saturday
the Trades Council is organising an anti cuts workshop @ Falmer.

Rather than add this in the body of the text advertising Friday night
I am circulating this as a separate email.

We normally cut back on promotions at this time of year, with the
Brighton Festival and the Summer months making the promotion of
regular nights more of a financial risk, this year we are having to
take a longer break to maintain the financial health and longevity of
Brighton Jazz Club.

It has become financially unviable for us to promote regular jazz at
Komedia and we have taken this opportunity to look for suitable,
affordable alternatives. We have some ideas in mind but at the moment
nothing is certain. What is certain is that we will be finishing in
the Komedia on Friday April 15th and reopening again on Friday
September 2nd.

We already have some exciting musicians booked in the Autumn season,
with the likes of Swedish saxophone sensation Marius Neset, pianists
Stan Tracey and Julian Joseph leading trios so we will be continuing
to promote top-quality, cutting-edge international jazz.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your
continued support and hope that you will follow us as we look to
pastures new.

I will circulate details of the new venue(s) as soon as more
information is available.

Hi steve I'm planning a call and response session using a blues in Bb
as the vehicle so if we can get the good folks to memorize the
sequence that would be great. Week after we'll be looking at rhythm
