Jazz Co-op

A treat of a week for you improvisers. Co-op members will be playing at the Dome Foyer again at 1.00 today. Good coffee and company and of course music. Why not pop in?

On Tuesday it will be the first time we welcome the great Alan Barnes to the Co-op. Alan is very experienced at leading workshops and summer schools. Anyone that has seen him will know that he is both a fantastic player, having won multiple awards, and something of a raconteur so expect to be taught and amused.

Fwd: big band

Co-opistas

Message from Pauol Busby who used to lead the Sussex Jazz Orchestra.

On Sunday 7th November at 8pm,  my big band is playing at the Brunswick.  The line-up is:  Dave Moorhouse,  Martijn van Galen,  Rob Heasman,  Bob Turner (plus possibly Andy Castleton.)
Paul Nieman,  Mark Bassey,  Tim Wade and Howard Beagley (trombones)
Alex Bondonno, Phil Paton, Brendan Kelly,  Simon D'Souza, Anna Jordanous (saxes)
Terry Pack (bass)  Dave Trigwell (drums) and myself on piano.

It is all original material,  some of which is taken from the Watermill Jazz Suite which I was commissioned to write and which was performed in Dorking in May,  and some of it is new stuff about Brighton itself.  (There will be a full Brighton Suite sometime next year - probably in the Spring.)

Tickets are £6 and £3 concessions.

Incidentally,  if you ever need a tutorial on writing tunes and arrangements,  get in touch with me.

best wishes,
Paul Busby

Playing over sus chords - Jake Goss

Jake gave us the following advice for playing over those mysterious sus chords

Play a ii- over a v in the bass - eg d-7/g and play d Dorian over it. Then take that through all twelve keys, arpeggiating, playing licks, etc. and you will feel more comfortable with those changes in no time. Also good to play pentatonic patterns - eg d min pentatonic over that same gsus (d-7/g).

In other words Gsus instead of playing G mixolydian play D dorian. Same scale of course starting on a different note. (Steve)

Tuesdays BJMC Workshop

Co-opistas

Master of the alto, Geoff Simkins will be leading a one off session on Tuesday.  I have attached the PDF files for "Moon Alley" by Tom Harrell. The piano part will serve for guitar and bass as well (there are a few rhythmic figures included). We have done this tune before so everyone should have the Kenny Garrett solo off pact!

A reminder that Co-op members will be playing again at the Dome Foyer this Saturday. Great juice, coffee and cake and no entrance fee so get down there for 1 pm and say hello.

Otherwise see you Tuesday.

Tuesdays BJMC Workshop

This Tuesday sees the wonderful Jake Goss back at the Co-op. One of our most popular tutors who always has something useful to teach. I will elt you know what tunes he is doing when I find out.

The Co-op Saturday gig went really well at the Dome foyer. Alice, Time, Hebie and Py kicked off the series. The space has an awful lot of reverb which could be a boon or a pain. A number of people dropped by to support and enjoy the good coffee and cakes which gave it something of a club atmosphere. I can see it will be a regular Saturday lunchtime slot for me to connect with friends.

Next week Jo will be leading a band.
